QuickThoughts: Jonathan Coulton, Birthday, Pets
I keep slacking at giving updates. This has been one hell of a year in many ways. It’s not all bad, but there have been a lot of ups and downs and just changes. Eventually I will get settled in a new semblance of routine so that I can do things like blogging more regularly.
Jonathan Coulton with Paul and Storm
On the 19th, Leah and I got the opportunity to go see Jonathan Coulton perform in downtown Dallas. For those of you who don’t know of him, he’s a singer-songwriter with a seriously geek bent to his style. His song inspirations range from being a dad to fractals and zombies. That would be interesting enough by itself, but he’s also very handy with his turns of phrase in lyrics, can sing well, and create some very nice and catchy music. I guess what I’m saying here is I’d probably listen to him regardless of his subject matter, the geek aspect is just a bonus.
The band that opened for him was Paul and Storm. These two guys are seriously entertaining. I hadn’t realized it, but I had heard them before. They regularly write songs for the Bob & Tom radio show. Their songs are witty and entertaining, but their live performance is even better. I’m not sure they weren’t comedians in another life. They’ve got a great presence and timing on stage and I was thoroughly entertained.
Everyone involved was cool with me taking pictures at the show so head on over to the gallery to check it out!
Happy Birthday!
Today is the 24th birthday of my beautiful wife, Leah. She’s just gotten more beautiful over the years, and I am a seriously lucky bastard to have found her.
Speaking of music, her birthday present from me this year is a home studio setup for her office. See, she’s a musician too, and quite talented. I got her a bunch of gear to help her produce some nice recordings, lots of fun techy toys. It’s a little bit selfish, cause I like listening to her work and love hearing the results. I know she enjoys making music too, so even if she never produced anything with the new gear it’s great just knowing she has it to play with.
It’s also our good friend Michelle’s birthday, and our friend Laura’s.
Pets and Passing
Now that the good news of late is said, I’ve got a very sad note. Cricket is being put to rest today. Cricket is an 8 year old miniature schnauzer who belongs to Leah’s parents. She’s always been a really great dog, lots of personality, very sweet. Sadly she’s developed a very aggressive liver cancer that is inoperable. She wasn’t my dog, but she was a friend. I’ll miss her.
I’ve had a lot of pets, and I’ve had several pass on. I can’t imagine it ever getting easier. I know some people are not animal people, but for those of us who are it’s very hard to view them any differently than our friends and family. I take some comfort in knowing that Cricket has had the absolute best life a dog like her could possibly. Her parents are true animal lovers, their pets taking a priority and level of attention that most people’s children don’t get. It’s nice to know that though she’s moving on, she’s had the opportunity to have a rich life in the time she had here.
Those of you who had the opportunity to meet Cricket, think on her fondly today, and of her family.
