The Skies are Alive

We’re enjoying a wide line of lightning storms right now. They got thrown off, or at least birthed by tropical storm Erin as it pushed it’s way inland. I went out and snapped some pictures. It’s pretty hard to do manually, but I got a couple that I liked alright. You can see them down in the latest photos. They’ll be permanently filed under nature here: three lightning photos.

I also put together a little time-lapse like film. It’s about 700k, so I’ll just link to it instead of embedding it. Go ahead and click, you know you want to.

Awe inspiring stuff, that is.

Storms make me think of space. More specifically, Jupiter. I always feel in all the vast amounts of volume of that planet, and all the various temperature and pressure zones, there’s a good possibility for a strange form of life.

I may not be as unrealistic as you think.

Scientists have been observing space dust organizing itself (seemingly) into helical structures. Read the article, they’re acting kind of like DNA and RNA. Maybe we’re witnessing a strange form of life. Maybe we’re witnessing the effects of forces too faint for us to discern. Maybe we’re watching some alien kids play with fireworks in their back yard.

For years I’ve had a fundamental question about life. Why does it seem that living creatures, perhaps evolution, is the only natural force that would seem to act against entropy? Of course entropy still affects all life, but life is constantly about creating better/stronger systems. One might say life tends to use entropy to it’s advantage through mutation.
