Quick Thoughts: Intro, Apple, Google News
I haven’t paid much attention to blogging for quite a while. The reason is I tend to save entries for when I have a lot to say, or I have something that’s at least been thought out pretty far. Well, I’m going to try and get away from that tendency.
Starting today I’m going to be doing updates called Quick Thoughts. I’ll pick a handful of tid bits that have recently caught my eye, say a bit, and leave it at that. There’s always interesting news, trends, and products that I want to talk about. I’m going to try and give a bit of thought instead of a lot so that I can post more often and share the links with you.
Apple updates hardware and software lineup
The new iMac is here, and I’ve got to tell you: It really wants to replace my 17″ G5. I like the new keyboard. I’m a big fan of my MacBook’s keyboard and they seem to be very similar. The update to iLife seems nice, but I don’t really ever use any of the iLife apps on a regular basis.
iWork however has me frothing a bit. I loved iWork ‘06, and the addition of the Numbers spreadsheet app has me wanting to plop down another $79 for the upgrade. Maybe next paycheck.
Google News to allow comments from people involved in stories
This one has me really interested. This will be the first big company with a respectable image to allow commenting on news articles outside of a niche. I’ve always liked the idea of newsvine, but hated the whole mob-rule mentality that open social networks generate. It’s not that I’m a fan of censorship or anything, I just haven’t seen any community site implement a way to filter out the crap that you will inevitably get along with the gold.
Google’s take on it is pretty cool. Let people that the news is about, from, or directed at, put their say in for others to see. Too often do we see news slanted one way or another. Politically, socially, aesthetically… it doesn’t really matter: there will always be bias. Allowing people involved to comment could really revolutionize news. If it catches on, it won’t be able to be one sided. My friend Ben had a tangential idea which I think is really great with his site SparkMeter, where users can submit articles and rate which way they lean politically.
