Explanation:
So I fall off a cliff around the Scarlet Monastery, and I decide to take a swim to see if I can climb up some mountain ranges and get into the eastern plaguelands or some such. I take a long swim, keep trying various mountain slopes… no luck. Then lo and behold “You have discovered Quel’ Thalas.”
Ok, isn’t that the blood elf start zone? I don’t have Burning Crusade. Score! Except all I was seeing was the back mountain range, so I guess it doesn’t really do me any good (I did get 450 xp for discovering it though.) I kept going for a while and came across the main scene in the shot above. Looks like some temples or some such, no access to the main zone, no creatures, no people.
So I kept going. I watched on the map and pretty soon I was in the middle of the Ghost Lands. Except there was no land, just water, and a coastline of mountains, despite being smack in the middle of the zone on the map. Apparently you have to teleport or translocate into that zone, and Blizzard decided it wasn’t necessary to have the geography match the map. I don’t blame them. Who the hell would take the time to swim the coastline?
