Weekend update with your host…
Another year, another number tacked on to the old age badge. I had a great birthday. Terry and Christy treated me to a fine sushi dinner at a local hibacci called Oishi. We followed that up with a night of revelry, gifts, and some homemade strawberry-blueberry pie. Yum. I made out like a bandit this year getting several nice shirts, some books I’ve been wanting, a few tech and camera gizmos, some videos, and a new car (for my desk.) With my birthday cash I went and got myself a set of Shure e2c in canal earphones which I’m rocking right now.
I also got an iTunes gift card, so the past day and a half I’ve been browsing through the iTunes store trying to find some good new music. This is especially problematic for me with that “new” qualifier. Even though we have and listen to XM–which gives us a FAR better selection of new music than any over the air stations can–It’s hard to find anything newer than 5 years that is still good. In most cases we already have it. I’ve expanded my search a bit and by using the “Listeners Also Bought” feature have discovered there’s a genre I like quite a bit that I didn’t even know existed.
Sure I’d heard the term before, but just imagined it was kind of stupid trendy term used by bands to further differentiate themselves from the masses. Not so, in fact many of my all time favourite bands happen to fall into the genre. It was at it’s biggest in the 70s influencing such luminaries as Kansas, Rush, Styx, Journey, Queen, and Genesis. None of those bands are principally prog-rock, but they all have endeavours that fit into the genre. Think the epic experimental, classically influenced Bohemian Rhapsody. Think Styx’ Sail Away.
I had grabbed a Dream Theater album on a whim about a month ago, and immensely enjoyed it. They’re part of a neo-prog-rock movement, or perhaps more prog-metal. I don’t really care about the silly terms other than the fact that it brings to my attentions artists I haven’t heard before.
So, anyone else love progressive rock? Shoot me a suggestion or three.
On another note, I’ve spent the entire day doing my taxes. Ugh. Honestly, paying them is not nearly as bad as going through all the headaches involved if you deviate even slightly from the norm in filing. Last year I was an employee of an S-Corp AND self employed. I worked from home the majority of the year, traveled for business quite a bit, and joined an LLC. Leah had a 1099, I had a 1099, w2, and k1, plus filed schedule C. To say that was a headache is a gross understatement. It’s done now, so I’m content, despite the gouge into my checking account.
