The Marvels of the Web

Lately this interweb thingy has really been cooking with gas.  I’m not one for hyping stupid buzzwords but there is a lot to be said for smart people coming up with innovative ways to use existing tech.  The web is a good medium to watch this in, because it’s ever changing, and there’s so many people actively working on it.

I’ve just installed a little widget called sphere.   If you visit a post on my blog (I’m looking at you feedreaders,) you’ll see a little image link at the bottom that says simply “Sphere It.”  Go ahead, give it a click.

What this is doing, is actually quite clever.  It’s analyzing the post you’re on, and giving you recommendations of other blog posts and articles that might be related to what I’m talking about.   I’m sure you see the value in this immediately.  Instead of the “social bookmarking,” sites like digg and del.icio.us that I no longer bother with, this actually creates value for YOU, the reader.  If you’re interested in some topic I’m babbling on about, you have almost instant access to other people’s views on the same thing.

To me, that’s pure gold.  If I’m intrigued by a subject, I tend to google or wikipedia it right off the bat.  Sometimes I find what I’m looking for, but more often than not I just find a few vague references.  Worse, I’ll often find people trying to sell me something, or one of those sites just whoring out ads or links.  With this, you actually connect to other people.  I’m hoping more and more sites start using it, as it’s one of the most valuable web-tech goodies I’ve seen in a while.

Cheers to the guys at Sphere.
