Not so much about ghouls and goblins
I like Halloween. It’s probably one of the most festive holidays we have left in The States. I think part of it is because it’s really hard to commercialize. Sure, there’s tons of stuff you can buy to celebrate. You can go to your local general store and pick up Decorations, costumes, candy, sound effects/special effects… but really none of it changes the character of the holiday.
It’s come far from it’s roots, but it hasn’t changed fundamentally in my lifetime, or my parents. It’s very social, going door to door in your neighborhood (or waiting for the kids to come to your door depending which side of the age gap you’re on.) It’s fun, often silly, sometimes mysterious. Today is Samhain; Yay Samhain.
There’s a lot of good things that are traditionally celebrated this time of year, and have been for centuries. A lot of the meaning is lost to ignorance, or cultural difference, but really looking back it’s good stuff. On the Celtic side we have the ending of the light season and start of the dark. The Celtic day began at night, so this is essentially new years. New beginnings. With the rise of Christianity it was adapted into All Saint’s Day, celebrating the blessed dead who had been canonized the previous year. Tomorrow will be All Souls day, celebrated by praying for the recently departed (not just saints this time!)
We had a fun time last night, though it was a bit too cold for my tastes. We had a handful of kids come by and I’ve put up a gallery here.
Next to no light available, so high iso + flash, and wide aperture. That combined with me not wearing my glasses made for a rough time getting good shots. Still, I managed to snag a few gems.

I especially like the Halloween shot of Ed as a pirate….he seems to have lost a lot of weight in the face since we visited.
