Great music you’ve never heard of: Dylan in the Movies - August Moon
If you’re reading a feed, visit the actual blog entry and you can hear the song.
There’s a lot of things that will make me like or not like a band. I say band loosely, Dylan in the Movies is actually one fellow with a lot of talented friends that collaborate. Sometimes you can be missing on few points and still be excellent, Dylan in the Movies hasn’t missed anything yet. August Moon is the song that brought my attention to them, I heard it on a podcast and immediately tried to find the band. Luckily they already had a website up, and I ended up asking to buy the EP before they even had a way for people to purchase it.
To me, this song has a somewhat haunting melody. It’s dark and dreamy. It evokes a sense of nostalgia, summer nights, and that feeling somewhere between regret and contentment. What impresses me most about this track is the vocals, they’re not my usual cup of tea but they work splendidly here. Somehow the lead singer and songwriter, Brian, manages to sing in a hushed, almost whispered voice but still convey great emotion and tone. This speaks volumes about their attention to detail and production/mixing value. The orchestral arrangements just augment the mood of the songs he writes, they don’t overpower them, but are still fantastic in their own.
The vocal stylings make me think of Jakob Dylan, but less poppy. I don’t know the origins of the name Dylan in the Movies, maybe it’s an intentional comparison to Bob or Jakob, maybe it’s ironic.
If you like the track, check out the website, show your support. If you must have more immediately you can get their EP on iTunes and Amazon

I agree. This song is magical. True underground indie chops here.
