Dubai ports fiasco

I just read the news. I really can’t believe it. Are they serious? What kind of idiots have we elected into congress anyway? Sure, President Bush isn’t the brightest fellow ever to grace the office, and sure mistakes have been made in his administration, but I really don’t think this is one of them.

First off, a very large portion of american corporations, services, facilities, etc are owned by non US companies. Secondly, UAE has been our ally for quite a long time. I can’t think of any time we’ve had problems with them. Thirdly, if we’re simply concerned about non US companies controlling our ports, why did we have a Brittish company up till now?

If I didn’t know better, I’d say this whole outcry is just some maneuvering to make the administration look bad in the public eye (like it really needs any help?) This is nothing out of the ordinary, and as far as I can tell is not in any way a security risk. If you’re concerned about foreign governments having control over our ports, just make them put it in a trust. That way they can own it and work with the money it represents, but the government itself has no direct control over the operations, that being left to the managing company. This is common, this is how it’s done, but apparently everyone on capital hill forgot that we’ve done that dozens if not hundreds of times before with nary a squeek.

It’s getting hard to read the news anymore, it makes my guts boil and my arteries tighten. You’d think living in South Florida for 3 years would have me desensitized to idiocy, but it hasn’t. It’s just amplified when I see it coming from people that we’ve put in office. Yeah, I know there’s a lot of stupid Americans, and it makes sense that they choose stupid representatives, but this kind of thing just makes me sick. What will happen now? Oh probably some American company will take over the ports and they’ll go straight to hell, beauracracy, red tape, graft, inefficiency, lack of any ability to get something accomplished. You know, the standard big corp USA way to get things done. Maybe I’m wrong though, maybe they’ll find some of the few movers left in our economy and it will end up being a good thing. I sure hope so.
