Speak and Spell
I was talking to Michelle and it occured to me that I’m not the only one who tends to spell words as I pronounce them, despite that not being the actual way they are spelled. Sure that seems kind of an obvious point, it’s not something you’re likely to give a second thought to, but I am.
What can I say, I’m weird like that. It’s the little curiosities that really set my mind in motion sometimes. One of the key culprits here is the word Calendar. Do you know anyone who actually says Cal Len Dar? I can’t think of anyone. I say Cal Len Der, and I have heard Cal Lan Der as well. If that’s indeed the norm, when did it change, and why? Maybe it’s just part of the “MidWest” dialect.
Also why do they call it “MidWest” when it’s basically “TV News Anchor” dialect? Why not “Generican” or something along those lines.
