HEY! ALL YOU F*ING IDIOTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA READ THIS:

Some intersections in America and Canada are “four way stops”. Similarly some T-junctions are “three way stops”. These types of junctions are often found in quiet residential areas where there is little traffic. However, they are sometimes also encountered on main roads, usually where two such roads with relatively little traffic cross each other outside of a town.

Every road approaching one of these junctions has a stop sign with the phrase “4-Way Stop” (at T-junctions the signs read “3-Way Stop”). At some junctions the signs read “All-Way Stop”, with exactly the same meaning.

There are no traffic lights at these junctions.

At a four way stop (or three way stop) every vehicle must come to a complete halt before proceeding one at a time across the intersection, regardless of whether there is any other traffic in sight or not, and also regardless of whether the vehicle is making a turn at the junction or not.

If two or more vehicles draw up to one of these junctions and stops, waiting to proceed across it, then they should proceed in the same order in which they arrived. The first vehicle to arrive is the first to proceed, the second vehicle to arrive is the second to proceed, and so on.

If two vehicles arrive at one of these junctions at precisely the same time, so that it is impossible to tell which arrived first, then in theory the vehicle on the right has priority. However, many drivers are unaware of this rule and there are complications due to all the possible permutations of turns. Therefore in this situation in practice most drivers negotiate by polite non-verbal communication (hand waving, etc, but for obvious reasons beware of extending one or two fingers, which might be misinterpreted). Drivers almost always give way to each other until one graciously accepts and proceeds. The flashing of headlights to mean “after you” is also sometimes used.

The fact that the four way stop system works so well, with so few accidents, is a very good illustration of the difference between driving in the USA/Canada and in the UK.

An intersection with a stoplight that is OUT becomes a 4 way stop. You don’t negotiate your turn by just driving out so no one else can go through the intersection, flipping others off, honking, or tailgating the person in front of you. As clever as you think you are, we can see you!

If you chose to disregard these simple rules, that not only keep traffic moving smoothly, but keep us safe, I hope you get t-boned by another idiot.

Please feel free to repost this in your LJ so some of these brain dead human wastes may see it and better themselves.
