Right now history is being made.
As I start to write this, Space Ship One is about to launch into the sky, and off the Earth.
While they’ve already done a test flight that put them about 62 miles above the earth (technically in space,) this is the big one. This is the first run where they’re actually competing for the $10 millon x-prize. If this flight goes well, they will launch again within 14 days, and claim the prize.
Why is this such a big deal? This is the first time a private company has aimed at space, and made it. This is PROFOUND. If these men are successfull it will not only be a victory for human advancement and spirit, but also private enterprise, individualism… most everything I hold dear. Whether they succeed, or die trying, these men are my heroes.
I am terribly excited. Honestly, I may get all teary eyed here in a minute.
And now, appropriate lyrics
Early in the morning sunlight
Soaring on the wings of dawn
Here I’ll live and die with my wings in the sky
And I won’t come down no moreHigher than a bird I’m flying
Crimson skies of ice and fire
Borne on wings of steel I have so much to feel
And I won’t come down no moreSail on, sail on, I will rise each day to meet the dawn
So high, so high
I’ve climbed the mountains of the sky
Without my wings you know I’d surely die
I found my freedom flyin’ high
I’ve climbed the mountains of the skyFloating on a cloud of amber
Searching for the rainbow’s end
Earth so far below me,
I’m here alone, free
I can’t come down no more
*edit*
THEY DID IT
Aside from a bit of extra roll during the rocket fire, everything went absolutely flawless viewed from the ground. I’m assuming some of the stabilization rockets didn’t fire quiet quick enough to compensate for windshear.
But wow… Wow wow.
Aside from meeting and marrying my wife, this is probably one of the most significant moments in my life.
