I’m kind of a freak…

At least according to my wife. I don’t think she’s wrong either. We just had a little convseration about “ok.”

That’s right, a conversation about that little abbreviation word. It was brought up because I said “k o.” She called me out on it, I get really annoyed when people say “kk.” I’m not really sure why, I just think it looks stupid/sounds stupid when I read it. She’s right though, “k o” isn’t any better.

But back to my original point: The freakish bit is that I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS. Everyone knows the idea behind it, but it’s sad that I know the origins of it. OK is an abbreviation for “oll korrect.” This came about somewhere in the 1830’s. It was a fad of comical abbreviations, most of which didn’t make it to today. Examples of other “words” from this fad are: NG (no go), GT (gone to texas?), SP (small potatos) etc. I believe OK still exists because around the same time “Okay” came about. Okay is an english version of “Okeh” which means affirmative in Choctaw. This was introduced into english speech by Andrew Jackson.

WHY DO I KNOW ALL THIS CRAP!? Well, I took a course in linguistics and odd trivia tends to stick in my head for some reason. The freakish thing is I’m like this all the time. I know a ton of really really useless stuff. It’s interesting, but me serves no purpose really. What’s sick about it is that if I DON’T know an interesting bit of trivia that someone is asking about… I just have to find out.

B’z is now officially my favourite band.
