First Hurricane
Well, that was the first hurricane I’ve been through. Not bad.
Granted, we only caught the edge of it. I think the max recorded gusts in the area were around 85 mph. Mainly, it was noisy and prolonged. We didn’t lose power, though a good portion of the county did.. but that’s to be expected with branches taking out lines in the wind. For all of you that don’t live in Florida, take note. The news is TOTAL BULLSHIT.
That’s right. 100% Grade A Feces. I suspected this after living down here a bit and talking with friends that’ve been down here a good while. I’ve been waiting until I’ve had some experience to comment on it.
After Charlie I talked with many of my friends in Orlando, Tampa and such, and yes, there was a lot of damage. Most of it was to trailers/modular homes. Most of that was too stuff built before hurricane Andrew caused the specs to be tightened up on how they build them. Yes, there was genuine damage all around, but it’s *Nothing* like what’s reported on the news. One person in specific commented to me something like: “If it hadn’t been for part of a trailer that blew off and hit my roof, I wouldn’t have had any damage at all.”
That’s not to say Hurricanes aren’t dangerous. No, they most definitely are. If this thing went through where I used to live there would probably have been thousands of deaths and billions of dollars of damage. It would slice through Louisville, KY like a hot knife through butter. But even with as much stupidity as there is down here, people are generally prepared for these storms.
I live in Broward county, this place is built like a bunker. It is hard to find something that isn’t concrete, and for good reason. When you see things on the news about evacuations, it’s just the coastal areas. People that live right on the beach more or less. People don’t skip town. Well, some do, but usually not because they need to. No, they just drive a couple miles inland.
I wouldn’t really make a deal about this, I mean, the news has to get it’s ratings right? They’re sensationalistic… tis the nature of TV news. It’s just that we got something like 30 phone calls from friends and relatives over the past couple days. They were all convinced we were going to die pretty much. It was kinda heartwarming, the concern, but boy oh boy were they misinformed. Apparently the news made it sound like Florida was a death trap and everyone living there was doomed. Nope… not the case.. maybe with Ivan, we’ll see.
On a somehwat related note, this song I’m listening to is a downright JAMFEST.
*edit*
I lied, the song I was listening to is not by TM Revolution, it’s by B’z. I’m downloading a pack of TM Revolution right now, I hope it doesn’t suck.
