Not to be an arrogant ass…


(Even though I AM an arrogant ass)

I find it completely RIDICULOUS dealing with a lot of IT companies. Why? Because 9 times out of 10 I can do their job better than THEY can. Customer service in the US IT industry is getting to be like customer service in england: non existent.

Granted, I’ve been working in the IT industry for 7 years now so I’ve got a lot of experience. For the last 3 years I’ve been mainly a programmer, and yet I can still manage a server better than most hosting companies.. and it’s THEIR JOB. It’s what they spend every day doing for 8 hours… well in some cases I’d say they probably only spend 10 actual minutes doing work.

Incompetence is so rampant in the IT industry it’s not even funny. A guy I did some work for back in KY has what is now becoming a pretty large business. I stopped doing work for the guy because he constantly lied to his customers, made them promises he had no idea if he could fulfill, etc. I know that’s pretty common when doing sales for IT products, but it’s just dirty. I just got to the point I couldn’t put up with it anymore. But that’s just one kind of incompetence.

The other: people do not know what they’re doing. I don’t know which is worse, or more common. I can’t tell you how often I’ve talked with or worked with people who have advanced degrees in some computer related field, but still have no clue how to get a job done. I’m not sure it’s a question of ignorance, or stupidity, or just apathy. I know some people who spend more time and energy avoiding work than it would take to actually solve the problem they’re avoiding. I know this isn’t limited to IT, but it seems RAMPANT here.

Vague enough? I’m not going to name the company that inspired this rant, it didn’t stay focused on them anyway.

Aside from my current frustrations. I’m very happy with my new bandwidth/hardware provider! Yay for serverbeach. I haven’t had a single problem yet. I’m also quite happy with my employer, it is such a nice change to be working with a lot of smart, competent people. So, not everyone in IT is a moron obviously… we just seem to have more than our fair share.
